New study on the effects of Sucrosomial® Berberine

The study recently published in the journal Nutrients demonstrates the high bioavailability and efficacy of Sucrosomial®Berberine*.

Alesco is proud to share the news of the recent publication of a new study, entitled “In Vitro and In Vivo Sucrosomial® Berberine Activity on Insulin Resistance”, conducted in partnership with the Departments of Medicine and Pharmacological Science at the University of Padua. The study, published in late August in the scientific journal Nutrients, investigates the absorption mechanism of Sucrosomial® Berberine* and its effects on glucose levels in a metabolic syndrome model.

Berberine is a natural alkaloid that, according to some published studies, demonstrates properties that keep cholesterol and blood sugar levels in check. Due to these characteristics, Berberine is a particularly interesting plant extract for controlling the fat metabolism. However, it has poor absorption capacities, and therefore to observe a measurable effect on the body, it has to be taken in very high quantities.

To overcome this limit, the normal Berberine plant extract was subjected to Sucrosomial® Technology, a delivery system that encapsulates the active ingredient in a matrix of phospholipids and sucrose esters (Sucrosome®). This patented system has been applied successfully for years to minerals, and, as shown in numerous scientific publications, it increases both gastrointestinal tolerability and absorption.

In this sense, the application of Sucrosomial® Technology to Berberine is an absolute innovation, as this is a plant extract and therefore an element with very different characteristics from minerals. In this study, it was observed that the presence of the Sucrosomial® matrix reduces the dose of Berberine normally used by up to eight times to obtain the same effect on keeping blood sugar levels under control.

“The results of this study are extremely important in scientific terms, as first and foremost they demonstrate the efficacy of Sucrosomial® Berberine* in treating metabolic syndromes linked to the control of blood sugar levels, and especially that Sucrosomial® Technology also improves the absorption of plant extracts that are usually hard to absorb, like Berberine,” states Elisa Brilli, Head of Research at Alesco S.r.l.

Further studies and research are required to confirm the results observed in this publication and investigate the properties and efficacy of Sucrosomial® Berberine*; but meanwhile the study is available for consultation online: https://doi.org/10.3390/nu14173595

*The product is not commercially available and further studies are necessary to define the correct dose.
